Although laser die cutting has benefits, there are some obstacles to the process. The first involves the materials, not all materials can be cutted by laser, suppliers must provide materials that can be laser cut.
Some materials cannot be cut with its machines, including PVC materials. When the laser burns, it releases certain gases. Some vinyl materials also turn yellow when cut.
Polypropylene used to pose a problem because the frequency of the laser would pass through the top material and cut the lining first. Materials have always been a challenge, but this challenge has begun to disappear. The substrate plays an important role, but it is more important to find a solution to the limitations of the substrate.
Another factor that could inhibit some converters from adopting laser diecutting is the price. A basic semi-rotary or full-rotary unit will run anywhere from $175,000 to $200,000. A laser die cutter will cost about $200,000.
Due to the angles at which lasers cut, a full-bleed label on top of a dark bottle could have the ink cut off on the top to where the white label substrate underneath is exposed. This could be particularly problem with wine labels. We will probably not sell them a laser die cutter machine if their lables are for wines. And if you’re running 500,000 labels all day every day, then laser technology is probably not for you. You can run that faster through a full rotary die and sometimes through a semi-rotary die.
