Applications of Micro-Perforated 5μm PET Film

Coptics Laser

When micro-perforations are applied to 5μm PET film, the goal is typically to enable gas exchange, breathability, moisture control, conductivity, filtration, or sensing functions. Below are common application scenarios:

✍️Typical Applications of Micro-Perforated 5μm PET Film:

1. Flexible Electronics / Flexible Sensors

  • Purpose: To enhance the breathability of flexible electronic devices, preventing sweat accumulation and overheating.

  • Application Examples: Wearable health monitoring patches, smart skin sensors.

  • Perforation Specs: Typically 1–10 µm holes, requiring high density and uniform distribution.

2. Medical Patches / Breathable Dressings

  • Purpose: Micro-perforations allow water vapor to pass while blocking bacteria, improving comfort and wound healing.

  • Features: PET serves as a support layer combined with medical adhesive tape, with perforations precisely controlling air permeability.

3. Biochips / Laboratory Consumables

  • Purpose: To control liquid flow or gas exchange — for example, in PCR plate seals or microfluidic chips.

  • Benefits: Micro-perforations allow gas permeability, helping to prevent bubbles or pressure build-up.

4. Food Packaging (e.g., Modified Atmosphere Packaging, MAP)

  • Note: While PET is not typically used as the main MAP film, it may act as a barrier layer in multilayer packaging.

  • In this context, perforation helps regulate oxygen/CO₂ transmission rates, extending the shelf life of fresh food products.

5. Optoelectronic Encapsulation / Thin-Film Batteries

  • Purpose: To control internal gas exchange, avoiding swelling or gas buildup that could degrade performance.

  • Examples: Organic solar cells, sodium-ion or lithium-ion flexible battery structures may include ultra-thin PET films.

6. Anti-Fog / Anti-Condensation Materials

  • Principle: Micro-perforated films help balance humidity and reduce condensation.

  • Applications: Optical lenses, camera module window films.

✍️Typical Micro-Perforation Parameters & Methods

  • Hole Diameter Range: 1–100 µm (depending on the application)

  • Hole Density: Can range from dozens to tens of thousands per cm²

  • Perforation Methods:

    • Laser perforation (especially suitable for PET)

    • Micro-needle perforation (mechanical method for high-volume, low-cost applications)

    • Plasma etching or UV lithography (for high-end microfabrication)
