What is Laser Packaging

Coptics Laser

Why use a laser for package processing?

The laser used in the packaging industry for:

  • Perforating plastic film or packaging.

  • Cut the plastic film to slice it or contour cut it.

  • Partially cut the plastic film to create easy-open packaging.

Why laser perforation?

Laser perforation is making many small and well-defined holes in a plastic film. The purpose of perforating a plastic film, which will later be processed (converted) into packaging, is the following:

1.Packaging performance is increased due to the fact that packaging atmosphere can be controlled by modulating the gas exchange in the package. The regulation of the packaging atmosphere can be used to enhance the quality and extend the shelf life of the product. Another application is the ability to compress bulky packaging so they occupy less volume.

2.The laser is used to perform perforations because of its high precision and low setup costs. Costs can be cut because there is no need for tools or any kind of contact with the material causing wear.

The picture shows laser perforation with different size holes. From the smallest that has a bore diameter of 0.076 mm to the largest measuring 0.381 mm.

Easy-open packaging using laser?

Offering an easy-open package is a competitive advantage. Using lasers it's possible to reach just the right processing depth into the package. The ability to accurately determine the depth of the notch enables cutting through some of the layers in a laminate while the second layer is left undisturbed. It is possible to get a cut adapted to the respective packaging and purpose.

The picture shows laser scoring used to create easy-open packaging. The package in question has a "zipper-closure" where the package is easily opened and resealed.
